FDA Regulatory and Registration Services

Help medical device and food businesses clarify FDA scope, registration and market access processes, and review product classification, responsibilities and documentation needs.

When a customer asks for “FDA documents,” first clarify what they mean

“FDA required” is not enough to define the work. When making an inquiry, provide the customer's exact request, the product's intended use and claims, and explain whether the business manufactures, packages or performs another activity. Captain International helps medical device and food businesses separate registration, market access and documentation tasks, then clarify who prepares each item.

Two common product areas

Product areaAssessment focusInitial information to prepare
Medical devicesIntended use, classification, market pathway, and facility and device registrationIntended use and claims, specifications, labeling, existing market records and manufacturer details
Food-related productsProduct type, facility activities, applicable registration and other import requirementsProduct category, manufacturing or packaging activities, facility and import partner information

For medical devices, determine whether the product may follow a 510(k), De Novo, PMA or exemption pathway based on its classification and applicable requirements. Facility or device registration does not replace a required market authorization process. FDA: How to study and market your device

Whether a food facility must register depends on its activities and applicable exemptions. Facilities within the registration scope can refer to FDA's online registration and renewal guidance. FDA Food Facility Registration

Registration does not mean FDA approval

FDA states that medical device facility registration and device listing do not mean approval, clearance or authorization, and FDA does not issue registration certificates for medical device facilities. Websites and product materials should describe the actual status and must not present a registration number as proof that a product is approved. FDA: Registered or certified medical devices

Deliverables that can be agreed

Regulatory pathway review, a documentation gap list, registration data checks, responsibility assignments and a list of updates. US agent services, testing, clinical evidence and market applications must each be confirmed as part of the engagement scope.

Frequently asked questions

Can we advertise “FDA Approved” after registration?

Registration must not be described as approval. Check the product's actual market status and applicable claims; do not use a registration certificate or number to imply FDA reviewed the product. FDA registration and certificate guidance

Do all medical devices need a 510(k)?

Confirm the product classification and specific conditions first, then identify the applicable pathway. A similar product name or appearance cannot replace a classification assessment. FDA device market pathway

Can we discuss the request before providing complete files?

Yes. Start with the intended use, product type, planned market date and current questions. Include existing labels or promotional claims and the document names requested by the customer. If the intended use is still under discussion, list the alternatives so an unapproved claim does not become the project assumption.
