Service classification and standard position

Validation and verification (V&V)

ISO 14019 is a series for verification and validation of sustainability information. Select the applicable part according to the information type and work scope; one part should not be treated as covering every sustainability disclosure requirement.

Official ISO information

Who should consider this and when

Suitable for organizations establishing sustainability information assurance processes, responding to customer requirements or preparing for external review. Confirm the intended use, organizational role, sites and reporting scope before selecting criteria.

Advisory focus

  • Sustainability statement: identify the accountable owner, data sources, method and review records.
  • Reporting boundary: define included entities, activities, sites and reporting periods.
  • Assessment criteria: document the criteria used to evaluate the information and why they are suitable.
  • Traceability and assurance readiness: connect reported information to source records and prepare an evidence index.

Support approach

  1. Confirm scope and criteria: discuss purpose, applicable edition, boundaries and stakeholder requirements; record assumptions and exclusions.
  2. Review current state and gaps: examine statements, boundaries, criteria, traceability and assurance-preparation records; assign owners to identified gaps.
  3. Prepare documents and pilot: organize procedures, forms and an evidence index, then test them on a real reporting case.
  4. Simulate review and improve: check consistency and evidence sufficiency against agreed criteria. Confirm any independent third-party provider and scope separately.

Information to prepare

  • Organization and site details, products or services in scope, and intended use.
  • Existing statements, reporting boundaries, evaluation criteria, source records and procedures.
  • Customer, regulatory or program requirements and previous audit or assurance findings.
  • Responsible departments, available staff, data gaps and target schedule.

Possible deliverables

Depending on scope: a gap list, work procedures, responsibility assignments, record forms, evidence index and improvement tracking. Technical reports and independent review are agreed separately at project start.

Timing and fees

Assessment depends on the number of sites, data quality, reporting complexity and review scope. Existing information is reviewed first, then deliverables, resources and milestones are agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Does advisory support mean that a certificate or assurance statement will be issued?

Advisory support helps prepare systems and evidence. A certificate, verification or validation opinion is decided by a qualified, independent body under the applicable program. A guidance standard does not itself target management-system certification.

Must we rewrite an existing system?

First check whether current procedures and evidence remain applicable. Retain effective practices and revise identified gaps.
