Different departments may use different periods, units and organizational boundaries for the same indicator. Training can start with an actual data table and help participants identify what it can answer, what evidence is missing and who should review it.
Audience and timing
Before annual data collection, report preparation or customer questionnaires, procurement, facilities, finance, HR and sales teams can clarify their roles. Experienced teams may focus on common rejections and handoffs; less experienced teams can first connect their work to sustainability topics.
Different disclosures serve different purposes
GRI focuses on impacts on the economy, environment and people. IFRS S1/S2 focus on sustainability-related financial information needed by capital providers. Customer questionnaires have their own purposes. Identify what each question asks before selecting data and wording.
Learning content to discuss
| Module | Practice outcome |
|---|---|
| Operations and sustainability topics | Identify relevant departments, data and management responsibilities from activities |
| Disclosures and customer requirements | Distinguish purpose, period and scope |
| Indicators and evidence | Record source, unit, period, estimates and missing-value notes |
| Roles and follow-up | Assign data gaps to owners and set response and review steps |
Carbon, supply chain or other topics can be added. Confirm editions and requirements before training; one worksheet is not a universal form for every standard.
Training process and outcomes
- Confirm whether the need concerns reporting, questionnaires or management, and understand participants' data skills.
- Select usable indicators, questionnaires or redacted cases; set the balance between fundamentals and practice.
- Have groups interpret data and explain its scope, sources and points still requiring verification.
- Compile worksheets, feedback and follow-up roles, then connect them to agreed workplace use.
Teaching materials, exercises and learning feedback can be discussed. Instructors and modules are confirmed for each need. Formal inventories, report preparation and external submissions require separate scopes.
Preparation and cost factors
Provide participant roles, topics, headcount, current forms and improvement needs. Cross-functional involvement, case preparation and individual feedback affect duration and fees. Confirm data-use authorization and delivery format in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Can we train only procurement or HR?
Yes. Focus on indicators and handoffs used by that role, then add concepts needed to understand the wider picture.
Can participants complete a sustainability report after the course?
The course develops methods and judgment. A formal report still requires data, analysis, drafting and approval; attendance is not a substitute for a complete project.
Can customer questionnaires be used in class?
Confirm confidentiality and permitted use first. Redacted versions can be used for practice; the company must verify figures and commitments in formal answers.
Can training be online or split into cohorts?
Arrange this based on headcount, exercises and discussion format. If departments need shared judgments, plan how cohorts will exchange results.
