Targets need to connect to an emissions baseline and measures that can be implemented. Before preparation, check whether the inventory is complete and distinguish actions already implemented, approved investments and proposals still under review. Do not present an aspiration as an evidenced plan.
Who should consider this and when
Companies preparing to set, update or submit targets should first confirm their entity type, industry, size and emissions profile. Then determine whether the general corporate, financial institution, SME or sector pathway applies; review FLAG requirements where land or agriculture is involved.
Keep the inventory, target and measures consistent
Differences between the group boundary, base year and target coverage can affect calculations and review. Measures should also avoid double counting. For example, when reducing electricity use and then calculating the effect of a change in energy procurement, use the same emissions workpaper.
Submission versions and applicability
Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 was published in June 2026 and is expected to open for submissions in the first quarter of 2027. SBTi's published guidance recommends that targets set or updated in 2026 continue to use V1.3.1. A version-selection arrangement is planned from the V2.0 opening through 31 January 2028; from 1 February 2028, new target submissions are to use V2.0. Recheck the official schedule before submission.
After selecting a pathway, confirm the base and target years, emissions coverage, absolute or intensity method and supplier-engagement requirements. Target validation is performed by SBTi Services; a consultant's calculation or a company's announcement must not be described as a validated target.
A project approach to discuss
- Compare the organization and emissions inventory; confirm the applicable pathway, version and preparation gaps.
- Develop target options using the relevant method and record boundaries, assumptions and data versions.
- Review equipment, energy and supplier measures for resources, timing and double counting.
- Organize submission materials and review responses. The company approves its targets and external statements and arranges ongoing tracking.
Company data and possible deliverables
You may provide corporate structure, base-year emissions, Scope 3 categories, existing commitments, investment information and supplier plans. Possible work to discuss includes readiness assessment, target calculations, measure mapping, data index and tracking table. Review fees, formal submission and specialist work for individual cases should be scoped separately.
Timing and fees
Inventory gaps, applicable pathway, sector requirements and company decision timing affect preparation. Inventory improvements, calculations, review responses and external fees should be estimated separately, with time allowed for version transition and supplementary requests.
Frequently asked questions
Can we start without a complete Scope 3 inventory?
You can begin by reviewing categories and readiness, but submitted figures still need to meet the applicable data requirements. “In preparation” is not a substitute for required evidence.
Does target validation mean we have achieved net zero?
Validation assesses whether a target meets the applicable criteria. It is different from actual emissions reductions, achieving net zero or making a product carbon-neutral.
Can carbon credits replace reductions?
Purchasing credits cannot be counted directly as completion of operational and value-chain targets. Other climate contributions must be described separately under the applicable version.
Is follow-up needed after validation?
Progress must be tracked and disclosed under applicable requirements. Changes to the organization, methods or operating assumptions should also be assessed for recalculation or target updates.
